Jathiswara
« Back to Glossary Index
The Jathis (rhythmic syllables) are combined with swaras (musical notes) in a particular raga and thāḷa. It is similar to a Swarajathi but does not contain any Sāhithyam. Only the names of notes are sung. Jathiswarams are used in dance recitals. Some jathiswarams are found in chauka kāla and in rāgamālikas. Usually it is the second item in a Bharathanātyam performance, an abstract dance number, in which diverse rhythmic patterns and musical phrasing are used.
