Temples
Ambalam, Dhevalayam, Dhevasthana, Koil, Mandhir, Dheula – Ever wonder what these words mean??? All these in different Indian languages indicate one entity and that is the Temple.
It is no exaggeration that India is the land of temples! Indian temples are a part of the rich cultural heritage of India. Some of them date back to over 2000 years. A temple is a combination of the concepts of yoga, astrology, and sacred geography. The Hindu temple is thus not a place where the faithful may gather but a sacred building constructed to receive subtle influences.
Hindu temples are generally divided into four main architectural styles: the Dravida style of South India, the Nagara style of North India, the mixed Vesara style and the Kalinga architecture (i.e. the temple style of Orissa).
You will find these places of worship in different styles, concentrating on one or more deities and occupying a place of pride in the region.
Take a tour to these sacred shrines through this portion as we bring you data on them under important heads like, location, deity, period, rulers/builders, architectural details, special reference to performing arts and compositions associated with the place and a ‘how to get there’ guideline.
Important temples in each Indian state are featured here.
