Hanuman Jayanti
Hanumān Jayanthi celebrates the birthday of Lord Hanumān (monkey God) who was the staunch devotee of Lord Rāma and it falls in the month of Chaithra. He symbolizes strength and energy as he is said to be able to attain any form he wishes, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Garuḍa in swiftness of light. It is one of the important festivals of the Hindus and the devotees visit temples to worship Lord Hanumān seeking his blessings and to conquer all the evil spirits. They apply Sindhūr on their forehead which is taken from that applied on Lord Hanumān’s body as it is believed to bring good fortune. Cultural programs are organized as a part of the festivities. The legend says that Sīthā was applying Sindhūr on her head and when Lord Hanumān asked her the reason for doing so she replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Later, Hanumān then smeared his entire body with it, in an effort to ensure Rāma’s immortality.
