May Day
This is observed on the first day of the May month as a spring fertility festival all over India to honour Goddess Spring. It is also observed as International Workers day. It is known as political protests day, saint feast’s day or a day of organized labour. This day is a declared public holiday in countries like India, Russia, United States and other countries following Communism. In India also it is celebrated as Labour Day. This day has its origin behind the US Labour movement in the late 19th century i.e., on May 1, 1886. On this day, several labour unions of United States carried out a strike demanding a standard of eight working hours per day. Though the protest did not have an immediate outcome, in the long run it proved to be effective as eight hour work days became the norm in almost all the countries. Later then, this day was selected for demonstrations, speeches and parades. This day is celebrated by carrying out processions, rallies, and competitions are organized for children belonging to labour class. In the recent days, this day is also considered as a tool for the workers and trade unions to demand and safeguard their economic interests.
